Replacing a broken door lock

to an existing door

There can be difficulties if an existing lock has been fitted and you wish to replace the set.

I recently fitted two deadlocks to my daughter’s property. One of the doors had an internal latch handle set already fitted.

Here are the steps to follow to fit a lock to  existing door furniture:

Step 1- remove the existing door lock

Remove the door furniture and measure the size of the existing hole already drilled as you will need to make sure the replacement set fits over that hole. Some door lock entrance sets require bigger holes than others.   You will save yourself a lot of aggro if you purchase a replacement set that fits the same size measurements as the door lock being replaced.   Make a note of the brand and model number of the existing lock as this may help the hardware attendant recommend a comparable replacement lock.

Although we were after a deadlock, the only  set I could purchase that would fit over the existing hole was another latch handle deadlock at three times the price.

Step 2 – tools you require

Purchase a door lock installation kit to ensure all holes line up correctly.
Quality 25mm wide chisel to recess brackets.
Drill and bits

Step 3 – Fitting the lock

Read the instructions very carefully before fitting the new lock. All door furniture comes with step by step instructions and templates to use, BUT drilling holes check all measurements first.

Set and clamp the door installation kit in place to meet the measurements given in the door furniture assembly instructions. Clamp in place, drill the relevant holes and then fit the furniture fittings.

Be prepared that it may take you longer to do than the professionals. But, if you take your time and you should be able to replace the broken door lock yourself without difficulty.
