Door Lock | How to Replace
Tips on how to replace a door lock
Door lock that is damaged or not working should be replaced as soon as possible if you value your home security.
I recently replaced a standard door lock with a deadlock to my daughter’s property. One of the doors had an internal latch handle set already fitted, and simply needed a lock fitted.
Here are the steps to follow to fit a door lock to existing door furniture:
Step 1- remove the existing door lock
Remove the door fittings and measure the distance from the centre of the door lock hole and the side of the door and measure the width of the existing hole already drilled as you will need to make sure the replacement lock set fits over that hole. Some door lock entrance sets require bigger holes than others.
Step 2 – tools you to change door furniture
Purchase a door lock installation kit to ensure all holes line up correctly.
Quality 25mm wide chisel to recess brackets.
Drill and bits
Step 3 – Fitting the door lock
Read the instructions very carefully before fitting the new lock. All door lock fittings come with step by step instructions and templates to use, BUT before drilling holes check all measurements first.
Set and clamp the door installation template in place to meet the measurements given in the door lock furniture assembly instructions. Clamp in place, drill the relevant holes and then fit the furniture fittings.
Be prepared that it may take you longer to change a door lock than the professionals. But, if you take your time and you should be able to replace the broken door lock yourself without difficulty.
